With you since 1978. PROBIOS (from the Greek PRO = in favour of; BIOS = life): IN FAVOUR OF LIFE – this is what our name means, and this is what has always inspired us.
Back in 1978, macrobiotic enthusiast (MACRO = large; BIOS = life) Elvira Rigo De Righi started importing macrobiotic products from Japan, which were then unavailable in Italy.
On 14 July 1978 she founded PROBIOS srl, a business located in central Florence. This was where her first container of Japanese macrobiotic products arrived – one of the earliest consignments ever to arrive in Europe, in fact.
One year later, PROBIOS expanded its product range to include many organic products and relocated to new headquarters on the northern outskirts of Florence. In 1980 Ferruccio Ledwinka, a leading authority and consultant on macrobiotics, joined the company. Ledwinka had previously worked with Michio Kushi and Noburo Muramoto and joining Probios was an opportunity for him to put his learning into practice.
Late in 1990 Fernando and Rossella joined the management of the company, driven by a passion for all things natural: food, environment, energy and medicine. Rossella and Fernando were determined to recast the image of organic food – previously seen as faddish and elitist – as a way of life that everyone can benefit from. Over the years they have worked to spread their message that natural food can help make the world a cleaner, happier place.
Today, Fernando and Rossella apply the same philosophy that has characterized the company since its creation, and continue to run Probios with the help of dedicated, enthusiastic personnel who share their mission.
Passion, ability, determination to succeed and above all a shared conviction that dreams can come true – that’s Probios, a leader in the organic foods market.
